How can i make sure my cat doesn't hurt our new kitten when im gone?

I've had a neutered male cat for about a yr and hes usually really nice. well we just took in a male kitten which will be nuetered when hes old enough. he hasnt hurt the kitten yet but ive been on vacation and return to work this sunday. i catch my cat on top of the kitten trying to bite him sometimes. what im worried about is while no one is home both cats have to be shut in the bedroom cuz i have birds out in the living room. is there anything i can do to get them to like eachother or at least ensure that the kitten doesnt get hurt?
