Is it inevitable now that the domestic box-office record gross sales of Titanic will be overtaken by Avatar?

It might, but not because more tickets have sold for Avatar than for Titanic, but because the ticket prices of Avatar are much higher than than they were for Titanic (because of the costs of 3d). More tickets were actually sold for Titanic than for Avatar.
