How do you skid across or appear in different places on tracks of mario kart ds?

I know this is a strange question, but in the game Mario Kart ds, I went on wifi and some of the other players were skidding and appearing in random parts of the race course right next to me. Some people probably don't even know what I'm talking about- but i reallllly need an answer!!!
